About this Medicine

Onivyde 43mg Infusion is a chemotherapy drug used in combination with other medications to treat metastatic pancreatic cancer, particularly in patients whose cancer has progressed after other treatments. It attacks the cancer cells and prevents them from growing and spreading. Onivyde 43mg Infusion is given as an intravenous (IV) infusion by a doctor or a nurse, generally in a hospital or a clinical setting. The dosing schedule is usually every two weeks, depending on your treatment plan. Make sure to attend all scheduled appointments to get the maximum benefit from the drug.Common side effects of Onivyde 43mg Infusion include diarrhea, fatigue, vomiting, nausea, decreased appetite, and fever. Stay hydrated and get enough rest to reduce the side effects. If you experience severe side effects like intense abdominal pain, persistent vomiting, or severe diarrhea, contact your doctor immediately.Onivyde 43mg Infusion can lower your immune system, so when on treatment with Onivyde 43mg Infusion, avoid crowded places and avoid contact with sick individuals and practice good hygiene. Do not receive live vaccines (such as those for measles, mumps, or chickenpox) while undergoing treatment. Onivyde 43mg Infusion can cause harm to an unborn baby, so it is important to avoid pregnancy during treatment and discuss contraceptive options with your doctor. Breastfeeding is also not recommended during treatment.

How it Works

Onivyde 43mg Infusion is a special form of a cancer-fighting drug called Irinotecan. Irinotecan works by blocking the ability of cancer cells to divide and grow, which eventually leads to their death. It does this by targeting an enzyme called topoisomerase I, which cancer cells need to replicate their DNA. In this formulation, Irinotecan is enclosed in tiny fat-like particles called liposomes and is pegylated, meaning it’s coated with a substance (PEG) that makes it stay in the bloodstream longer. This helps the drug stay active in the body for a longer period, giving it more time to reach the cancer cells. The liposomes also help target the drug more specifically to cancer cells, reducing the side effects on healthy cells.
